Collecting forest berries has always been a cherished pastime in my household. It can be in yours as well. Like mushrooms, forest berries have an allure to them in the wild that always begs the question, “is that edible?” My extensive experience picking berries in our Oregon forests combined with a willingness to teach you proper identification will lead you towards a confident knowledge about both edible and non edible berries in the wild. Berry picking in Oregon, as elsewhere, is a late summer proposition. The main types I provide guided trips for are the Mountain Huckleberry and the Blackcap. I take up to 4 people per group, or individuals. I will make sure you are on to the right berries before we pick and will accompany you along the way to make sure you stay on them.

Huckleberries are the wild cousin of our domesticated blueberry. Distinguished with amazing flavor these berries were reserved for the specialist of occasions for millenia. There are 13 different varieties of “hucks” in our northwest forest and i can show you which ones are best! This is a wonderful familial activity that you wont regret embarking on!

Blackcaps are a relatively unknown treasure of our northwest forests. They are actually wild black raspberries, therefore they are pretty easy to locate once you are in the right areas. Identified by their chalky blue canes and droopy posture, they are an indication that something especially tasty is nearby. A bit seedier and more mealy than its domestic red raspberry cousin, the blackcap shines when its juice is extracted from its pulp. Making the most stately of seedless jams and jellies, dilectible syrups, and even exquisite wines, the blackcap is a gem of a berry to have in your know how. My guided trips for blackcaps run for about a month and a half, starting in mid July. You will want to wear denim pants and a sturdy long sleeve shirt to ward off the thorns, but it will be well worth your while with the luscious berries you pick along the way.
